Gretchen W. Purser is an Assistant Professor of Sociology and a Senior Research Associate in the Center for Policy Research at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School.
Prior to joining the Maxwell faculty, she was a University of California Presidential Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Sociology at University of California, Davis. She received her doctorate from University of California, Berkeley, and her bachelor’s degree from Smith College.
Her research focuses broadly upon work and urban poverty, specifically addressing the issues of precarious work, temporary staffing and the informal/underground economy.
She is currently completing a book on the day-labor industry entitled Labor On Demand: Dispatching the Urban Poor.
