The Continuing Unemployment Crisis

Colleagues,

As Labor Day approaches we all need to think hard about how to get leaders in government, business, labor, education and other segments of society focused on the jobs crisis that persists in America

The graph accompanying this note prepared by Eileen Appelbaum and colleagues at the Center for Economic and Policy Research tells the story in stark and worrisome terms.

Some 42 months after the start of the Great Recession the economy is still about 7 million jobs short of recovery to prerecession levels. The real worrisome point of the graph is that there is no observable path to getting those jobs back.

This picture, more than any other I’ve seen, tells us America needs a strong, sustained, and comprehensive new jobs program. Let’s all use Labor Day to send this message loud and clear to our nation’s leaders. More than any other year, we all need to speak out clearly on this issue.
