Mitchell’s Musings 8-13-12: Mass Neglect

The mass layoff event series of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics receives little public or academic attention. But it contains information of use to forecasters and academics. Recent data from the series suggest that at present high unemployment is reflecting reluctance of employers to hire rather than high levels of layoffs.
